Medicare is an essential resource for many Americans. This government-sponsored program can help people over age 65 and those with certain disabilities secure cost-effective and reliable health insurance coverage. However, Medicare is also subject to various changes each year, necessitating constant vigilance and due diligence from those who rely on it. At Wimmer Insurance, we can help you understand what to expect regarding your Medicare coverage in 2025.
5 Key Changes to Medicare This Year
Understanding every detail of your health insurance plan should be a top priority. Even seemingly small changes could have drastic impacts on your ability to access certain services or how much you should expect to pay for them. In 2025, consider how the following Medicare-related changes may impact your health insurance:
- Increased out-of-pocket costs—If you have Original Medicare, which includes Parts A and B, you will observe slight increases in your deductible, premiums and coinsurance in 2025.
- Part D out-of-pocket caps—Medicare Part D, also known as prescription drug coverage, will limit out-of-pocket costs at $2,000 this year. After reaching your deductible, you’ll pay 25% coinsurance until you’ve spent $2,000 out of pocket, at which point your coverage will pay for all prescription medications included in your plan formulary for the rest of the year.
- Reduced Medicare Advantage benefits—Also known as Part C, Medicare Advantage plans may offer reduced coverage in 2025. Specifically, your policy may no longer cover over-the-counter medications, transportation services and at-home support.
- Additional mental health coverage—Many Medicare plans may help you access additional mental and behavioral health services starting this year. This may include coverage for safety planning services and reimbursements for services such as visiting marriage counselors and family therapists.
- Prescription drug payment plans—When paying copays and coinsurance for prescription medications, you’ll now have the option to set up a payment plan to help manage incremental out-of-pocket costs rather than having to pay lump sums.
