Medicare Supplement Plans Information

Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap, offer options to help with certain out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare. While Minnesota plans are standardized differently than in most other states, they still follow federal guidelines and offer a range of benefits for eligible residents.

How Minnesota’s Medigap Plans Are Different

Minnesota provides a Basic Plan and an Extended Basic Plan, along with several optional riders that allow individuals to customize their coverage.

The Basic Plan includes core benefits such as partial coverage for foreign travel emergency care physical therapy, outpatient mental health, and skilled nursing facility care. The Extended Basic Plan builds on this by offering additional benefits, including coverage for routine medical care in a foreign country, Part B deductible, Part A inpatient hospital deductible and more coverage for skilled nursing facility care.

Residents also have access to state-specific versions of Medigap plans K, L, M and N, plus a high-deductible Plan F for those eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.

Eligibility and Enrollment

To be eligible for a Medicare Supplement plan in Minnesota, you must be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. The best time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which begins the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During this six-month window, you can buy any Medigap policy offered in your area without medical underwriting.

Outside of this period, you may still apply for a plan, but acceptance and pricing could depend on your health history. Some individuals under 65 who qualify for Medicare due to disability may also be eligible for Medigap plans, though availability and pricing vary.
